“DR. Olufunmilayo Olopade to recieve “Health Achievement Award” at the 2011 Yoruba Heritage Awards

                                                   FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“DR. Olufunmilayo Olopade to recieve “Health Achievement Award” at the 2011 Yoruba Heritage Awards.

The executive team of the 2011 Yoruba Heritage Awards is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2011 Achievement Award for Health (North America/Canada), Dr. Olufunmilayo Olopade.

Dr Olopade is the Walter L. Palmer Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine & Human Genetics, Associate Dean for Global Health, and Director of the Center for Clinical Cancer Genetics at the University of Chicago. She is also a practicing clinician and Director of the University's Cancer Risk Clinic.

In February this year, the White House Press announced her appointment to the US Cancer advisory board by the Obama administration; a gesture that is rooted in her high profiled practice as a hematology oncologist with proven expertise in hereditary breast cancer and cancer risk assessment.

As one of the top leading experts in breast cancer research, she continues to help scientist around the world to gain better understanding of the disease. She also works with educators, medical practitioners, government officials and pharmaceutical companies to improve access to quality information, education and medical care in low-income communities.

She is also actively involved in outreach programs in Nigeria. “Dr. Olopade has established the first collaborative team of investigators qualified to conduct breast cancer clinical trials in Nigeria, the most populous country in sub-Saharan African with a population of 140 million” reveals the New York based Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Her track record in the medical field is evidenced in the numerous awards and fellowships she has received over the years; MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, the ASCO Young Investigator Award, the James S. McDonnell Foundation Scholar Award, and the Doris Duke Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award, among others. Dr. Olopade is also an Executive Council Member of the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC). She holds an M.B.B.S. from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, completed her residency in internal medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in hematology and oncology at the University of Chicago.

The Yoruba Heritage Awards is an annual award made to recognize and reward excellence and outstanding achievement by individuals and groups of the Yoruba sons and daughters.
